Course Description

Develop a complete classroom management action plan for immediate implementation! After reading Responsive Classroom for Music, Art, and PE, reflect on your current practices and develop a personalized, positive approach to classroom management.

Course Objectives

In this course, learners will:

  • Explain the important of predictable routines and classroom procedures.
  • Develop opening routines for starting classes.
  • Understand the importance of the use of modeling, both as a classroom management and instructional tool.
  • Know the difference between reminding, redirecting, and reinforcing language.
  • Use language that supports student efficacy.
  • Create an interactive learning environment that engages students, while promoting a sense of security and belonging for all students.

Prerequisites

Bachelor’s degree and teaching certificate in the area of music

Required Materials

  • Responsive classroom for music, art, PE, and other special areas. (2016). Turners Falls: Center for Responsive Schools.

Course Format & Requirements

Our courses utilize a custom Learning Management System (LMS). Our Music ConstructEd Online Courses are asynchronous and self-paced. You can correspond with your instructor and submit all assignments within the LMS. A syllabus with a suggested pacing guide will be emailed to you at the start of the class.

  • Teachers will need their own devices with a stable internet connection to access the digital Learning Management System (LMS) which is provided by Music ConstructED.
  • Access to Microsoft Word and PowerPoint or Google Docs and Google Slides (you can register for a free Google account if you do not already have one).

Refund Policy:

Within 14 days: For a period of 14 days before the start of the course, a full refund will be given on the total amount of tuition fees paid, less processing fees and registrar fees, at the time of cancellation. The student must notify Music ConstructED in writing via email or letter received on or before the 14-day period. If you apply for a refund within 14 days of the course start date, our refund policy does not apply. However, you can transfer to a different MCED course by paying the registration fee of $60 per graduate credit.

Opening Routines

The learner will understand the importance of predictable classroom procedures, reflect on your current opening routines for starting classes, and know some instructional skills that support opening routines. This lesson module requires approximately 2 hours to complete.

Interactive Modeling

The learner will understand the steps of interactive modeling and how it supports students' cooperation and independence, reflect on your current use of interactive modeling in your classroom, and know how to implement interactive modeling. This lesson module requires approximately 5 hours to complete.

Rules and Routines

The learner will understand that our rules and routines support a safe, predictable, and positive learning environment. They will reflect on your current rules and routines and how they support student learning and know how to teach and reteach rules and routines throughout the year. This lesson module requires approximately 5.2 hours to complete.

Interactive Learning Structures and Academic Choice

The learner will know how to define and implement Interactive Learning Structures, incorporate rules, interactive modeling, and teacher language into Interactive Learning Structures, and understand why academic choice is important and how to incorporate it into a music classroom. This lesson module requires approximately 7 hours to complete.

Responding to Misbehavior

The learner will know how to use energizers to refresh and refocus students' attention, reflect on their approach to classroom management and discipline, and understand how to respond to misbehavior using a positive approach to discipline. This lesson module requires approximately 4.4 hours to complete.
